Zurich Research Highlights Gaps in Legacy Planning Among UK Adults

New research from Zurich reveals that while most UK adults worry about their family's future, fewer than half have a valid will and even fewer hold life insurance.

Zurich Research Reveals Legacy Planning Shortfall

Zurich's latest research underscores a significant gap between the intentions and actions of UK adults regarding legacy planning. According to a survey of 2,000 UK adults conducted by Opinium, 79% are concerned about how their loved ones would cope after their death. However, only 48% have a valid will in place, and just 32% hold life insurance. Many respondents have also not documented their wishes for passing on assets and personal possessions.

To raise awareness around this issue, Zurich has partnered with TV chef and presenter Matt Tebbutt to launch 'Legacy Kitchen'—a project combining family recipes and personal stories to highlight the importance of both memories and practical preparations.

Zurich emphasises that having key documents and memories organised in one secure location can help ease the burden on families during difficult times. As part of its group protection policies, Zurich offers LifeVault, a secure platform for storing important documents and keepsakes, with the ability to share access with trusted individuals when needed.

The research serves as a reminder for advisers to support clients in discussing and planning for their legacy, ensuring both emotional and practical needs are addressed.

Research conducted by Opinium for Zurich, July 2026, with a nationally representative sample of 2,000 UK adults.
