Unum UK Highlights Overlooked 'In-Between' Stage of Cancer for Employees

Unum UK is drawing attention to the lack of support for employees during the uncertain period before a cancer diagnosis, launching a new cancer navigation service to address this gap.

Unum UK Calls for Greater Support During Pre-Diagnosis Cancer Stage

Unum UK has highlighted a critical gap in workplace support for employees experiencing the 'in-between' stage of cancer—when individuals are awaiting a diagnosis and facing uncertainty, often while still at work.

Research from Reframe Cancer, referenced by Unum, indicates that employees take an average of 12 days off work due to symptoms or worry before a cancer diagnosis, and a further 16 days during testing and diagnosis. Notably, one in three employees reported feeling isolated at work during their cancer experience. Despite the fact that around 90% of cancer referrals do not result in a diagnosis, the period of waiting and uncertainty can significantly affect wellbeing and work performance.

Liz Walker, Chief Operating Officer at Unum UK, commented on the challenges faced by employees: “The stage before diagnosis often happens while people are still trying to carry on with work, making decisions without clear direction or knowing what comes next. Even when tests don’t turn into a diagnosis, which happens for around 9 in 10 people, the period of testing and waiting can take a real toll.”

To address this, Unum is introducing a personalised cancer navigation service for employees covered by its Group Income Protection and Group Life products. Delivered in partnership with Reframe Cancer, the service offers access to cancer navigation specialists to help employees understand their situation and next steps during the waiting period. The support is structured and clinically governed.

Professor Ben Kelly, Chief Operations Officer at Reframe Cancer, emphasised the importance of early support: “Without the right guidance, this can quickly impact both wellbeing and performance at work. Making the right support available early can help people navigate that stage with more clarity and understanding.”

Unum UK encourages employers to recognise this often-overlooked stage and provide early intervention to help employees feel more in control and less isolated.
