New Guide Launched to Support Carers in the Workplace

Canada Life has released a new guide to help employers and line managers better support employees balancing work and caring responsibilities, highlighting the need for flexible working and wider wellbeing support.

New Resource for Employers and Managers

Canada Life has published a new guide, Supporting people who balance work and care, aimed at helping employers and line managers support staff with caring responsibilities.

Recent findings indicate that 73% of employed carers find juggling work and caring stressful, and 44% have reduced their working hours as a result (Carers UK, 2024). As longevity increases, caring duties are expected to become a more prominent aspect of working life.

Beyond Flexible Working

According to Canada Life’s Life100+ research, only 25% of employers currently offer flexible working to carers. However, the guide emphasises that flexibility alone is not sufficient. Carers may also benefit from understanding managers, time away from work, wellbeing support, and clear signposting to relevant services.

Practical Guidance

The new guide brings together practical steps for employers and managers, including recognising the impact of caring, having supportive conversations, and knowing where to direct employees for further help.

Additional Resources

Canada Life also offers mental health webinars to help managers recognise early signs of stress and poor mental health among employees. The Life100+ research explores the broader implications of longer working lives, and the WeCare app provides insured employees with access to health and wellbeing services, including a 24/7 Virtual GP.
